Mini Tennis Rally Awards

The Highland Spring Mini Tennis Awards have been designed for players between the ages of 5 and 10 years old to help mini players take part in exciting exercises with regular rewards which encourage them to develop their tennis skills at a pace that suits them.
Mini players progress through different levels by acquiring new skills and taking part in exercises.
Within each of the levels, Mini players learn and are tested on four important skills:

  • Rally – Learning and developing rallying skills
  • Serve – Learning and developing serving skills
  • Come to the net – Learning and developing movement forwards and volleying
  • Score and Compete – Learning the rules, how to score, how to compete and fair play

Within the Mini Tennis Awards there are:

Key teaching points – these are technical points to be aware of, which can be built into lessons as areas of development, but they should not all be used at the same time.

Movement – movement skills are vital for development and are written into each Awards skill exercise.

Mental skills – are vital for all round game development and are written into each Awards skill exercise.
For more information visit the LTA website.

At the Wirral Tennis Centre today we witnessed a fantastic tennis match between Arantxa Rus of Holland and Diana Marcinkevica of Latvia in the final of the LTA GB Pro-series $25000 Women’s Competition.
This has been the best final we have ever seen at the Wirral Tennis Centre!
It had an absorbing first set with a tie-break, and there was drama with an injury affected second set, and a deciding set that had a closely fought tie-break finish.
Rus was the pre-match favourite with a world ranking of 110 and had been as high as 61 in the world. Marcinkevica is ranked 353 and has reached the top 200.
Marcinkevica took a significant early lead in the first set and was 4-1 up when Rus, who started sluggishly today, won the next two games to make it 4-3. Marcinkevica had a set point at 5-4 and 40-0 up and lost the game, and 5-5 became 6-5 to Rus until Marcinkevica took this fabulous set of tennis to a tie-break on her serve.
On the first set tie-break Marcinkevica held the advantage throughout and won the tie-break 7-2.
Tragedy nearly struck in the second set when Marcinkevica incurred a back injury which needed thorough physio treatment.
As a result the second set was won easily by Rus 6-0. Would this be the end of the match? Could Diana Marcinkevica recover?
The watching spectators were very much in support of Marcinkevica as she didn’t give up at the end of this second set and played remarkably well in the deciding set to combat the fierce resistance of Arantxa Rus.
The deciding set was hard fought and it was close, it was 4-4 then 5-5 until Rus lost her serve and Marcinkevica now led 6-5 and just had to serve to take the set.
More drama as Marcinkevica lost her service game and now we had a tie-break decider!
The tie-break was also dramatic, everything on serve until Rus double-faulted to make it 3-1 to Marcinkevica this became 6-2 when Rus lost another point on her serve.
Rus won the next two points to close the gap at 6-4 but Marcinkevica’s final serve clinched the tie-break 7-4 and the match was won.
A very popular champion today, Diana Marcinkevica from Latvia, who battled through injury to defeat a much higher ranked player with an outstanding performance.
Both players played superb tennis of the highest quality, it was a match to savour and will long be remembered by those who witnessed it.
It was a great advert for women’s tennis, the Wirral Tennis Centre and the LTA Pro-series tournaments.
The whole week was full of exciting matches, it has been a fantastic tournament with very talented players from all over Europe and America.
We have witnessed the rise of a new British player, Emma Raducanu who defeated two highly ranked seeded players to reach the semi-final. Emma is still only 15 and proved in this tournament just how good a player she is already.
Emma is one of the best prospects for British tennis for the future and I am sure we will hear more about her in the future.
Today belongs to Diana Marcinkevica, a thoroughly deserved and popular champion of the Wirral LTA Pro-Series $25000 event. I hope that Diana will come back to the Wirral to defend her title next year.

World tennis on our doorstep!
At the Wirral Tennis Centre this week we are being treated to a fantastic display of tennis in the ITF Gb Pro Series Women's competition.
Players from all around Britain and Europe and America too
The competition was lit up yesterday by the English player Emma Raducanu when she knocked out the Austrian number two seed Barbara Haas. After losing the first set 3-6 Emma battled back to take the next set 6-3 and won the deciding set 6-2.
This wonderful performance is even more remarkable because Emma is only 15 years old and her opponent is ranked over 600 places higher!
Emma Raducanu is from Kent and was born in Toronto Canada. She came to England when she was 2 years of age. She has already won two ITF world titles and is the youngest winner of a Nike under 18 tournament held in Liverpool two years ago at the age if 13. Emma is a wonderful prospect for British tennis.
Today Emma will face the number 8 seed from Belgium, Greet Minnen.
Play starts at 10.30am at the Wirral Tennis Centre, today is the quarter finals of the singles competition and the semi finals of the doubles,
If yesterday is anything to go by then today's play is not to be missed!
